A "Guide" to working with artists with aphantasia
(specifically me)
A healthy dose of both written and visual information is needed, but the percentage of which heavily depends on the type of commission and how familiar I am with the characters.- Is it an illustration of a scene between two character? Descriptive information on the scene, the emotions, general vibe, dialogue are more important to the composition - but visual references on each character (and their characteristics), the space, the palette, and any objects would be needed.- Is it a reference sheet commission? Descriptive information is no longer as important, and the main focus is on the visuals. Descriptive information would be limited to a brief description of personality, placement of certain markings, and/or the written information on the reference. Visuals would be EVERYTHING - every single aspect of that character would need a reference.Google Docs, Google Drives, PDFs, Character pages (Toyhou.se or Refsheet.net) is an easy way to compile both written and visual information in one place!
What is some good visual information to compile for your characters?
Physical
Age/Race/height/body type
Skin colour/ scars/ freckles/ skin conditions etc
Eye colour/shape
Nose shape
Hair colour/texture/style/decorations
Any additional details (prosthetics limbs/no limbs!/tattoos/piercings/wings)
Face Claims are extremely helpful - and itβs okay to have more than one!
Itβs good to specify which parts of what reference are important to your character
Items
Clothing/Jewelry/Accessories
Weapons
Personal Items
Companions
Here is an example of how I organize my Pinterest boards for my own Ocs:
Appearance: Every single visual reference I would need for their physical appearance. Faceclaims, hair styles/texture/colours, facial hair, body types, hand shapes, nose shapes, lip shapes, eye shapesAesthetic: Helpful for illustrations. Palettes and aesthetics that I attribute to these characters. Art styles, symbols, colours, settings, etc...Outfits: Outfits and accessories. Full outfits or single items, textures, colours, patterns.
Please Keep In Mind
I cannot work with only drawn references in simple stylesFROM MY TOS:6.2 Character Referencesβ At least one reference provided for premade characters must either be drawn and/or be photographs of real people.β If the only references provided are from video games (be they cannon characters or PCs) or a Piccrew there will be a 5% increase on the total price of the commission.
Examples of references I struggle to work with:
Simplistic styles
Anime
Game Screenshots ( read TOS 6.2)
Piccrews
Examples of good references to send me:
Realistic drawn references
Semi-realistic drawn references
Real life photos
What is some good written information to compile for your characters?
Written information can vary from commission to commission; unless the illustration is based off a story, I donβt need a novel to be written about the piece.Being dyslexic also makes it a struggle for me to parse through written information - I tend to have to break it down outside of the initial commission submission to fully understand.I also tend to ask a ton more questions when Iβm provided more written information than visual - revisions take time and energy.Itβs important to have visual to accompany your written info:

I still require some form of visual reference to work off of.β Please be clear and concise in your description of any changes. You can use other works and photos you like as references for the changes.β I offer an unlimited amount of changes in the sketch phase, as well as any minor changes thereafter (ie. colour changes, small changes to line work, sizing, moving information). Any larger changes after the sketch phase will cost a minimum of 5$ depending on the change (ie. changes to poses, large line work changes, etc). If you are unsure if the change you are requesting is small or large, please ask.
5. Refunds
β Once our negotiation is done and I start your commission, I cannot refund you the full amount. This is negotiable depending on the state of your commission.β I do not do refunds unless I, the artist, initiate the refund due to a breach of these terms or 90 days have passed without completion of your order.-- In either situation, I will initiate the refund. Filing a chargeback against my account will result in you being blacklisted.β I do not do refunds on pre-made designs.-- If you file a chargeback against my account after purchasing a design, you will be blacklisted from all future sales/commissions and you will forfeit all rights to the design.

About Me!
Hi I'm Babbyrat!I'm a disabled, queer, Canadian artist living on the Pacific coast. I've been drawing since I was very young, and posting online for just as long (my old Deviantart from 2010 is still up to prove it). Art has always been a huge part of my life, so has character creation and story telling. I currently live with one of my best friend, our two cats Croutons and Mimi, and a weird bird we call Fart.Along with digital illustration I also crochet, sew, and sculpt art dolls! I have an ever growing collection of crochet blankets and will continue to make more despite having too many already. All of my hobbies hurt my wrists.I never know what to put in an About Me! I don't know how to talk about myself or the things that I enjoy. My favourite colour is green. My favourite animals are rats, triceratops, peregrine falcons, vultures, and weevils. I will eat anything that has strawberry in it so long as it's not a jelly donut.
If you were on Foopets.com in 2009, were a part of the thunderclan RP, and remember someone named Chard you should DM me :-) I'm so serious.
Especially if your name is Meka!!
